History
Founding
The land that is now Poland, Ohio was founded on July 23rd, 1796. Poland was one of the first areas of land to be charted in the Western Reserve Area. This area, now Poland, Ohio, was labeled as “Town 1, Range 1”.
Historians believe that the name of “Poland” originated from a Polish Hero of the Revolutionary War who was well known and considered a hero to the community. Although new homes have been built, Poland has kept it's traditional colonial look that was brought by the settlers from New England.
Growth
In the very early days, Poland had a larger population than Youngstown. Poland was known for it's good supply of coal, limestone, and fertile soil. These minerals soon drove the famous Mills of the Mahoning Valley. The coal and limestone are still being mined today. Poland now is now considered a small bedroom community. Poland has a Police and road departments, a joint fire department, and a recycling program. According to the United States Census Bureau, The Population of Poland Ohio is 5,520 (2012). Poland has shrunk 10.85% since 2000.
Significant Changes
Poland consists mostly of private homes and some small businesses. Major Highways have been built around Poland, including US Route 224, which goes right through the center of Poland Village is known to be very busy. Interstate 680, which runs North and South also passes through Poland. I-680 eventually turns into the Ohio Turnpike. Poland is located right next to two cities which have bigger businesses, Boardman, Ohio and Youngstown, Ohio.
